I am really into streamlining, refining, and perfecting systems—maybe it’s the German in my blood. My latest conquest has been the post-workout beauty tools essential for transforming a sweaty mess (red cheeks, throughly misplaced bangs, enraged pores) into something socially acceptable. Sometimes a gal just can’t get home for a full-blown shower between sweat session and social life.
The way I see it, post-workout beauty falls into two categories, the basics and the advanced, if you will. Here, we explore both levels.
The Bare Essentials
For the most basic cleanup job, I pack a slim comb (exactly the length of this little pouch) for hair realignment, Origins’ Modern Friction exfoliating cream wash (in handy dandy trial size), and Trader Joe’s Virtuoso Lip Balm.
The face wash was recommended to me by a co-worker, who told me in October that it was the only thing that made her face really feel clean since the change of seasons (dead cell buildup in the cooler months is serious, people). I tried it and texted her immediately—game changer. After a workout, scrubbing off dead cells (and dried sweat, eek!) is especially important.
Lip balm from TJ’s? Yep. It’s my goal to have a lip balm in every single coat pocket and purse pocket from September ‘til May, so I bought a three pack of these on a whim while checking out at the grocery store one day. I was blown away—the only thing more hydrating is slathering coconut oil right on your pucker (which I am not above, and also purchase at Trader Joe’s).
Getting Real Pretty
Meeting someone post-workout that you like, kind of want to look cute in front of (but not cute enough to either skip your workout or go home and bathe for)? Here’s my lineup: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer and Benefit Fakeup for the skin, Benefit They’re Real mascara for the lashes, Bite Beauty Mini High Pigment Pencil (in Cranberry), Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme.
For skin, the tinted moisturizer does a nice, light coverup job while also moisturizing (and tossing in a bit of SPF). Benefit’s Fakeup is buildable, covering up blemishes without getting cake-y.
I can’t write enough about how much I love Benefit’s They’re Real mascara. It’s just the bomb. And it comes in a “mini deluxe” size, which is perfect for keeping on your person at all times.
Bite Beauty is a Canadian brand that recently opened a “Lip Lab” in Soho where you can make your own custom lipstick ($28). I’ve been twice and I love it so hard. This is an “off the rack” color called Cranberry, which is only available for the holiday season, in the brilliant high pigment pencil. It’s like Sharpie for lips in the very best way: this shit does. not. move. It’s also buildable, so paired with lip balm you can either go for a light sweep of color or full-on power lips.
Atelier Cologne is French—duh—and they gift you a personalized mini-size scent when you buy a full size scent. Brilliant! I love scents that layer over salty summer skin—floral and spice, a tiny bit of musk. Luckily, this translates well to post-workout skin on a 30 degree day, as well.
Voila! Coffee date ready. You’d have (little to) no idea I just kickboxed for an hour.
(My nails are Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Mein Herr, by the way—the best combo of pastel and nude.)
